This annual course of study, comprising about 15 hours of instruction, provides an overview of the changing principles that govern the field of accountants’ liability. It particularly emphasizes the developments that followed the major corporate failures that have been linked to fraudulent financial reporting and issues that the profession likely will face in the coming years.

• Increased regulatory activity at the federal and state level, including inspections and discipline;
• The increasing internationalization of accounting standards and convergence of GAAP and IFRS;
• Practical litigation tips for both plaintiff and defense counsel;
• Preparation and trial of an accountants’ liability case;
• Trustee actions and the in pari delicto defense;
• The growth of Section 11 claims;
• Proof of causation and damages in accountants’ liability cases; and
• Ethical issues involving loss contingency changes, FIN 48, and internal investigations.
