Will covered bonds finally become a reality in the U.S.? Will they become an answer to the hundreds of billions of dollars of CMBS slated to mature over the next few years? Will this European technology finally be adopted in our own country?

Adverse accounting and regulatory developments for CMBS has led many (like us) to suggest that covered bonds will become an important funding alternative. Over the past several months there has been a bill introduced in Congress for U.S. covered bonds, and even now, a number of foreign banks have accessed the U.S. market with oversubscribed covered bond issuances.

We will discuss:

  • The proposed U.S. legislation, and why it would be beneficial for U.S. issuers;
  • Why covered bonds might be attractive to investors and issuers;
  • Covered bonds compared to CMBS;
  • Keys to access the U.S. market; and
  • What every commercial real estate lender needs to know about covered bonds.

This is a free event. You may attend in person or through dial in.

Speakers:

  • Mark Edelstein, Morrison & Foerster LLP
  • Yehudah Forster, Moody’s Investors Service
  • Paul Hinton, NERA Economic Consulting
