Daniel F. Muto is an associate in the Global Privacy and Data Security practice group at Morrison & Foerster LLP’s San Diego office. Certified as an information privacy professional (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals, his practice focuses on advising clients in various industries regarding legal requirements and best practices for the collection, use, and sharing of employee and consumer personal information.

Mr. Muto regularly represents Fortune 500 and emerging companies in connection with a wide range of global privacy compliance and enforcement matters, such as: drafting and implementing privacy and information security policies; responding to data security breaches; structuring electronic monitoring programs; addressing concerns related to electronic marketing (e.g., behavioral advertising) and social media; and complying with state, federal, and other relevant regulatory requirements. He has served as counsel in numerous enforcement actions involving the alleged misuse of personal information, including matters before the Federal Trade Commission, the Office of Civil Rights, and state attorneys general.

Mr. Muto is an active volunteer with several local nonprofit and legal aid organizations. In 2011, he received the Wiley W. Manuel Award from the California State Bar for his pro bono contributions.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Muto was an associate in Foley & Lardner’s San Diego office. He also coached basketball in Accra, Ghana as a volunteer for the Ghana Basketball Association. Mr. Muto received his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 2009 and is a graduate of Wake Forest University, where he received his B.A., summa cum laude, in psychology and Spanish in 2006 with numerous academic honors, including the Ruth Foster Campbell Departmental Award for Excellence in Spanish. As an undergraduate, Mr. Muto also studied Spanish literature and art history at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. He is highly proficient in Spanish.
