John Tessman is a Patent Agent in the firm’s Palo Alto office. He has extensive experience in patent drafting, filing and prosecution before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and in coordination of patent prosecution before the European Patent Office and other jurisdictions in association with foreign patent counsel. He also has expertise in prior art searching in the chemical arts and search analysis relating to due diligence, freedom to operate and patentability. Mr. Tessman worked as a scientist and inventor in the biotechnology industry for over twelve years before becoming a patent agent. He also has considerable in-house experience, giving him a valuable perspective in client communication.

Mr. Tessman has drafted or prosecuted patent applications in areas of chemistry and biotechnology, including small-molecule pharmaceuticals, medical device and methods in the treatment of blood products, and modified organisms for the delivery of antigens.

Mr. Tessman received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, where he did research involving analysis of psoralen/DNA photoproducts. He received his master’s degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, where he attempted to develop a benzodipyrone molecule as an alternative to psoralen for probing nucleic acid interactions.
