Johnny Chiu is a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. Mr. Chiu has extensive experience representing technology companies in Taiwan and China in IP litigation matters before the International Trade Commission and in U.S. federal and state courts. His intellectual property litigation practice is focused on patent, trade secret and other intellectual property matters for clients in the consumer electronics, computer and communications industries, among others. He also advises foreign companies on compliance and negotiation strategies in the course of creating and operating U.S. subsidiaries or affiliates.

Raised in Taiwan and legally trained in both Taiwan and the U.S., Mr. Chiu is fluent in Taiwanese and Mandarin Chinese. He spends a significant amount of time in mainland China and Taiwan, where many of his clients maintain operations and manufacturing facilities. He applies this background to guiding clients through the process of U.S.-based litigation.

Mr. Chiu formerly served as U.S. chief legal officer for one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers based in Taiwan, which provided him with a unique perspective needed to counsel clients on a strategic business level. Earlier in his career, he launched the Shanghai, China office of an international law firm and served as its chief representative and head of office. Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, he was a partner at Covington & Burling.

Mr. Chiu is recognized by Chambers Global 2012 in the areas of China: Intellectual Property (Experts Based Abroad) and USA: Intellectual Property (Foreign Experts). He is also cited as a recommended lawyer by Legal 500 US 2013 and Chambers Asia-Pacific 2011.
