J. Alexander Lawrence's practice involves all aspects of complex commercial litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts and in arbitration. Mr. Lawrence has represented U.S. and international clients in actions involving intellectual property rights, trade secrets, federal securities laws, the False Claims Act, and a wide array of commercial disputes.

Mr. Lawrence joined Morrison & Foerster in 2000 and became a partner in 2005. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Lawrence was associated with a large international law firm, where he practiced labor and employment law, representing clients in federal and state courts throughout the country.

Mr. Lawrence is co-chair of the Morrison & Foerster’s E-Discovery Task Force and regularly advises clients on e-discovery issues and best practices. Mr. Lawrence is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and has been a member of its Standing Committee on the Judiciary.

Mr. Lawrence received his J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif.

Biovail Corp. v. S.A.C. Capital Mgmt.

(N.J. Super.) Represented a former pharmaceutical industry securities analyst in a $4.6 billion RICO action which was ultimately dismissed with prejudice. (2009)

United States ex rel. Smith v. Yale New Haven Hosp., 415 F. Supp. 2d 58

(D. Conn.) Obtained a favorable settlement for Yale University in a qui tam action brought under the False Claims Act. (2006)

Multi-Faceted Investigation of University Grants

Advised major U.S. research University in criminal and civil investigation of alleged false claims relating to federal research grants and contracts. (2009)

NFL Enterprises LLC v. EchoStar Satellite LLC

(Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York). Counsel for EchoStar in a major carriage dispute in connection with the distribution of the NFL Network on EchoStar's DISH Direct Broadcast Service. Successfully defended the client against a motion for preliminary injunction and a motion for partial summary judgment. After engaging in an extensive discovery process over an expedited time frame, the action was settled on a confidential basis. (2009)

Office of the Commissioner of Baseball v. EchoStar Satellite LLC

(Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York). Counsel for EchoStar in a dispute involving the distribution of the Major League Baseball Extra Innings Package on EchoStar's DISH Direct Broadcast Service. Successfully defended the client against a motion for summary disposition. The action was settled on a confidential basis. (2009)

VOOM HD Holdings LLC v. EchoStar Satellite LLC

(Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York). Counsel for EchoStar in a $2 billion-dollar breach of contract action arising out of an Affiliation Agreement for the distribution of High Definition television programming. Successfully defended the client against a motion for preliminary injunction and a motion for summary judgment. The action was settled during the course of the jury trial. (2012)
