Katie Roney’s practice centers on consumer class actions, with experience in patent and environmental litigation. She has represented clients in mass, complex litigations, including multi-district litigations and consolidated class actions. Ms. Roney has worked with both plaintiffs and defendants and drafted motions in federal and state court, including motions to oppose class certification and motions to challenge personal jurisdiction over foreign holding companies. She also took a lead role in the extensive fact investigation and discovery efforts for a major patent case, overseeing the collection, review and production of hundreds of thousands of records from over 80 custodians.
Ms. Roney is active in the firm’s pro bono efforts, particularly in the area of immigration. She has obtained asylum for a victim of gang violence in El Salvador, successfully defended against removal actions, and spoken at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights on the topics of prosecutorial discretion and asylum claims. She is a recipient of the State Bar of California’s Wiley W. Manuel Award for public service.
Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Ms. Roney was a member of the legal team at The Nature Conservancy in Honolulu, Hawaii. There, Ms. Roney was involved in structuring international carbon offset projects and conservation easements.
Ms. Roney graduated from the University of Michigan with honors and received her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. During law school she served as Editor-in-Chief of the East Asia Law Review and studied Chinese law at Peking University in Beijing.
