Miriam Wugmeister is chair of the firm's Global Privacy and Data Security Group. Few lawyers in the world have the breadth and understanding of privacy and data security laws, obligations, and practices of Ms. Wugmeister. Ms. Wugmeister is regularly called upon by the largest and most complex multinational organizations to plan and execute global complex compliance efforts, assist in the negotiation of strategic deals, and defend regulatory and litigation matters relating to privacy and data security in the U.S. and internationally. She regularly provides advice on data security breach issues; the global collection, use, sharing of employee, customer, vendor, and consumer personal information; ediscovery/monitoring conflicts; social media issues; and cloud computing deals, as well as on developing data security policies and procedures and cybersecurity preparedness and response plans. Ms. Wugmeister also works with small and non-profit organizations as they seek to comply with the myriad privacy and data security laws in the U.S. and internationally.
Ms. Wugmeister worked to develop the firm's Privacy Library and the MoFoNotes subscription database so that organizations can keep apprised of privacy and data security compliance requirements in jurisdictions around the world. She is also co-editor of Global Employee Privacy and Data Security Law, Second Edition (BNA Books, 2011).
Ms. Wugmeister leads the Global Privacy Alliance (GPA), which encourages the rational development of privacy laws around the world and monitors privacy practices, laws and regulations globally. The GPA is a coalition comprised of a cross-section of global businesses from the financial services, automobile, aerospace, consumer products, computer and computer software, communications, and electronic commerce sectors.
Chambers USA 2012 and Chambers Global 2013 recommend Ms. Wugmeister in the top tier of U.S. privacy and data security lawyers and as “terrific and very responsive.” She is also noted as a leading lawyer who “wins the respect of the market, particularly for her international work” by Legal 500 US 2012. In 2011, clients noted she was “extremely practical and phenomenally smart. Just about one of the best privacy advisers there is.” (Chambers USA 2011). Ms Wugmeister is also recognized by Best Lawyers in America 2012 and Super Lawyers 2010.
