Stephen Birkett specializes in corporate finance and securities matters, including public offerings, public and private mergers and acquisitions, regulatory compliance and investigations, corporate restructurings, and other commercial transactions. His experience includes more than 20 years handling such matters in Hong Kong and also London.
Mr. Birkett's three years as Senior Director of Corporate Finance at the Securities & Futures Commission enable him to provide clients with valuable insight into the regulator's perspective on issues confronting them. Previously he was a partner and Head of Corporate Finance at a leading Hong Kong law firm, and before that a partner in a leading international law firm, where he worked on a number of the early listings by mainland Chinese companies.
Mr Birkett is a member of the Hong Kong Government's Standing Committee on Company Law Reform. He is recognized as a Leading Individual for Debt & Equity Capital Markets by Asia Pacific Legal 500 2009/2010, and was selected as a recommended lawyer for Company & Corporate Transactions and Mergers & Acquisitions by Global Counsel 3000. Mr. Birkett is a frequent speaker at conferences on Hong Kong securities legal issues and has authored chapters on the Hong Kong Takeovers Code and Listing Rules in the popular “Practitioner’s Guide” series. He is fluent in French and Spanish.
