James J. Mullen, III is Of Counsel in the San Diego office of Morrison & Foerster LLP, and a member of the Intellectual Property Practice Group. Dr. Mullen’s practice includes strategic patent procurement, general counseling on infringement issues, and intellectual property due diligence studies. He also provides counseling on interference issues and reexamination practices.

Currently, Dr. Mullen represents clients pursuing inventions in a variety of biotechnology-related areas, including cancer therapeutics and diagnostics, infectious disease therapeutics, small molecule screening protocols, and novel nucleic acid and amino acid sequence protection.

Dr. Mullen has research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, and has an abiding interest in virology, especially as it relates to gene therapy and vaccine applications.

Dr. Mullen received his BA from the University of California, San Diego in 1988, his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Health Science Center, at Houston in 1994, and his JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco in 1997. He is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Mullen joined the firm in 2003.
