Mr. Gates is a member of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition Law group, resident in the Los Angeles office. His practice includes litigation, representation of parties before federal and state antitrust enforcement agencies, and counseling, with emphasis on matters involving the intersection of antitrust and intellectual property.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Gates was a Deputy Assistant Director at the Federal Trade Commission. During his tenure with the FTC’s Anticompetitive Practices Division, Mr. Gates oversaw numerous investigations and litigated several high-profile antitrust cases, including the trial of a monopolization case against Unocal involving patents and standards-setting issues and the trial of a matter challenging real estate multiple listing service rules.

In private practice, Mr. Gates has litigated and tried antitrust cases in various industries, including the computer memory, movie, music, cellular telephone, and chemical industries. In addition, he has litigated and tried patent cases in the pharmaceutical, computer, and nuclear power industries.
