Mr. Fields received his B.A. degree in 1968 from Harvard College and his J.D. degree in 1972 from Yale Law School. He was elected Phi Beta Kappa at Harvard and Managing Editor of the Yale Law Journal. Following a federal judicial clerkship, Mr. Fields joined the New York law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, working in both the New York and the Paris offices of the firm. In 1980 he became associated with the law firm of Morrison & Foerster, becoming a partner of the firm in 1981.

Mr. Fields engages in a general corporate and banking practice. His practice includes domestic and international mergers and acquisitions and capital market transactions, and his clients include international and domestic financial institutions.

Mr. Fields has been named one of the world’s leading banking lawyers by the International Financial Law Review, has been named a leading lawyer in the U.S. in Financial Services Regulation and Financial Institutions M&A by Chambers USA, and is one of only four attorneys in California to receive the highest individual rating in banking and finance by Global Counsel 3000 (7th edition). Mr. Fields was also named a Leading Lawyer for Banking (USA) and Banking (Asia-Pacific regions) by Asia Law & Practice magazine, a Best Lawyer in America in the field of Banking Law, and one of the top 100 M&A attorneys by The BTI Consulting Group, and listed in Super Lawyers magazine.

Mr. Fields served as Chair of the Institute for Corporate Counsel from 2000 to 2001 and continues as a member of the Board of Governors. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Bankers Association of California and the Chair of the Executive Committee of The Starlight Children’s Foundation.
