Madeline Johnston is a member of the Intellectual Property group in the Palo Alto office of Morrison & Foerster LLP. Dr. Johnston focuses her intellectual property practice on patent law in a variety of technology fields including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, enzymology, inorganic chemistry, drug delivery and polymer chemistry. Dr. Johnston has a wide range of experience in patent law and provides patent portfolio strategic counseling and comprehensive portfolio management for emerging and later stage companies, as well as universities and research foundations. Dr. Johnston’s practice includes due diligence evaluation and strategic counseling at all stages of product development, and includes patentability, freedom of operation, infringement, and validity evaluations and opinions. Dr. Johnston’s practice also includes due diligence on potential investments.

Dr. Johnston received a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Brown University, a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Brandeis University, and a J.D. from Suffolk University School of Law. She carried out post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the areas of enzymology and site directed mutagenesis. Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Dr. Johnston was Chief Patent Counsel for a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery and development of drugs for the treatment of human viral infectious diseases. Dr. Johnston is a member of the State Bars of California, Massachusetts, and Georgia and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
