Kathi Pugh is the firmwide Pro Bono Counsel for Morrison & Foerster. She is responsible for administering all aspects of the firm’s extensive pro bono program. In 1990, she started her legal career at Morrison & Foerster as a labor associate in the Labor & Employment Department.
Since 1996, Kathi has served on the Council of the Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities (IRR) of the American Bar Association and in 2001 was elected to the Council Leadership. She has been on the editorial board of IRR’s Human Rights magazine since 1999, and is currently Co-chair of the magazine’s editorial committee. Kathi served on the Board of Directors of the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), and on the Board of Directors and President of the San Francisco Barristers Club. She has served on and chaired a number of bar association disability rights committees, including IRR, California State Bar and BASF. She also chaired the Pro Bono Committee of the Barristers Club. She currently serves on the California State Bar’s Leadership Academy Advisory Committee, BASF’s Judicial Evaluation Committee, and as Co-Chair of the BASF’s Disability Rights Committee.
Kathi has also been active in the community, and has served on the Board of Directors of Equal Rights Advocates, the ACLU of Northern California, Legal Services for the Elderly, the Berkeley Community Law Center, Legal Services for the Elderly, the Center for Independent Living and Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors among others. She currently serves as a judge for the Donald P. McCullum Youth Court which offers youthful offenders in Oakland a second chance, thereby avoiding the criminal justice system.
Kathi graduated in 1984 from the University of California at Berkeley where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Economies of Industrial Societies. In 1990, she received a joint degree from the University of California at Berkeley, a Juris Doctor degree from Boalt Hall School of Law and a Master of Business Administration degree from Haas School of Business. In addition to her graduate studies, Kathi served as an elected Commissioner to the City of Berkeley’s Rent Stabilization Board. In 1988, along with several of her classmates, she co-founded, the East Bay Community Law Center which is now the largest provider of legal services in Alameda County.
She and her husband, Josh Maddox, enjoy sailing on the San Francisco Bay and bike riding in off-leash dog areas with their two Rat Terriers, Rosie and Fannie. Since 1981, Kathi and Josh have called Berkeley, California home sweet home.
