Joel Haims specializes in securities and complex commercial litigation, primarily representing public companies and their officers and directors in securities class actions, shareholder derivative suits, SEC investigations and internal investigations. Mr. Haims has extensive experience with arbitration and mediation. He also has experience drafting SEC filings, running corporate and securities transactions, and negotiating commercial contracts.  

Mr. Haims's clients are from a broad range of industries, including financial services, real estate, life sciences, technology, and consumer products, and many are foreign-based, including in China and Israel.

Securities Litigation for Foreign-Based Companies
(C.D. Cal and S.D.N.Y) Successfully defended a number of Israeli-and-China based companies in U.S. securities litigation.
Westchester Day School vs. Village of Mamaroneck, et al.
(S.D.N.Y.) Successfully represented the Westchester Day School in landmark pro bono litigation under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act against the Village of Mamaroneck and its Zoning Board, arising from the Village's efforts to deny the school permission to renovate and expand its facilities. The school prevailed at trial in the SDNY and on appeal in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. WDS's damages claim was settled favorably. (2008)
In re IPO Securities Litigation
(S.D.N.Y.) Served as court-appointed liaison counsel for more than 300 issuers and 1,000 individual defendants and also directly represented over 30 issuer defendants, and approximately 200 individual defendants. This is one of the largest, most complex securities ever brought. (2009)
Bond Offering Litigation
(Supreme Court, New York County) Represented the Hong Kong affiliate of a Big Four accounting firm in litigation in state court in New York against state law claims arising out of a bond offering by a Canadian public company. (2006)
Derivatives Litigation
(S.D.N.Y.) Won dismissal of all claims against an investment firm and its two principals in securities litigation arising from a complex $50 million PIPE (private investment in public equity) transaction involving equity and interest rate swaps. (2007)
