Jonathan S. Dickstein is a partner in the San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster LLP, co-chair of the firm’s Life Sciences Group and a member of the firm’s Technology Transactions Group. His practice concentrates on representing life science and other high technology companies in intellectual property-related business transactions and counseling, as well as corporate finance transactions. He has represented a variety of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, as well as software, hardware, Internet, and consumer electronics businesses on a broad range of transactions, including inbound and outbound licensing, drug discovery and development deals, joint research and development collaborations, manufacture and supply arrangements, distribution and reseller relationships, co-marketing agreements, software development and outsourcing projects, strategic joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Dickstein served as Vice President, Business Development and Legal Affairs, and as a member of the Board of Directors of DoubleTwist, Inc. (formerly Pangea Systems), a bioinformatics software company at the forefront of applying genomics and proteomic technologies to the drug discovery process. While at DoubleTwist, he coordinated a $10 million venture capital financing from Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, Mayfield Fund, and Investment Venture Partners for the company, successfully negotiated enterprise software licenses with major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and in-licensed over 25 technologies from academic and government institutions as well as commercial entities under technology transfer agreements. As a member of the founding team, Mr. Dickstein helped to grow the start-up from a small software consulting operation of nine employees to a venture-backed software products company of eighty employees.

Mr. Dickstein began practicing at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton in New York in 1994, where he focused his practice on corporate tax and corporate finance. Prior to joining Cleary, Mr. Dickstein was a clerk to the Honorable Juan Torruella of the United States First Circuit Court of Appeals from 1993 to 1994. He received his law degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard University School of Law in 1993. While at Harvard, he was an editor on the Harvard Law Review and a member of the Harvard Defenders, a program designed to offer legal counsel to defendants in criminal cases. Mr. Dickstein received his B.A., with high honors, in International Relations, from Stanford University in 1989.

Mr. Dickstein joined Morrison & Foerster LLP in January 1999 and is a member of the California State Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the Licensing Executive Society.
