Dr. Shieh-Newton is an associate in the Biotech group of Morrison & Foerster’s Palo Alto office. Her current practice focuses on preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as well as portfolio management, strategic patent counseling, performing both investor and company side due diligence, and interferences.
Dr. Shieh-Newton received her J.D. from Santa Clara Law School where she made the Dean’s List every year. She received her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Her doctoral research focused on the early immune responses to HIV and SIV infection, in particular the role that natural killer and T cells play at the earliest stages of retroviral infection. Dr. Shieh-Newton has authored multiple publications and has presented her research at several scientific meetings. Dr. Shieh-Newton was a student fellow in the laboratories of Nobel laureates, Dr. Joseph Goldstein and Dr. Michael Brown, conducting research on farnesylated ras proteins. Dr. Shieh-Newton received her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Rice University in Houston, Texas. While at Rice University, Dr. Shieh-Newton conducted research on oxysterols and its metabolism as part of an honors program.
Prior to attending Santa Clara Law School, Dr. Shieh-Newton was a patent agent at Morrison & Foerster. Her prior experience included patent prosecution, portfolio management and strategic patent counseling for biotech and pharmaceutical companies, due diligence, and performing patentability and freedom to operate searches and evaluations. She also assisted in patent litigation cases for large biotech companies and performed due diligence.
Dr. Shieh-Newton is a member of the State Bar of California and is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
