Mehran Arjomand is one of the heads of the firm's Patent Reexamination Group. Mr. Arjomand has handled or advised on more than 50 reexaminations, with an emphasis on inter partes reexaminations. He has experience initiating and defending reexaminations in all aspects from filing to appeal. Mr. Arjomand also regularly counsels clients on reexaminations co-pending with litigation. His experience as a trial lawyer prior to joining Morrison & Foerster informs his practice, particularly in contested inter partes reexaminations.
Representative reexamination clients include Apple, EchoStar/Dish Network, Kyocera, Netlist, Oracle, Time Warner, The Motion Picture Association of America, Verizon, Yahoo!, and Yamaha.
- EchoStar. Prepared and oversaw the inter partes reexamination of a patent asserted against EchoStar. All original claims were canceled, except one claim which was amended. The matter settled favorably for EchoStar.
- Mitsubishi. Represented Mitsubishi in requesting inter partes reexamination of a patent. All claims were canceled.
- Yamaha. Handled ex parte reexaminations of two patents asserted against Yamaha. All claims were canceled.
- ConjuChem. Worked on a team that successfully defended a patent during reexamination.
- Amado. (USDC, Central District of California). Successfully represented individual software inventor in patent infringement trial against Microsoft, resulting in an award of $6.9 million jury verdict, which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit on appeal. Successfully defended the patent during reexamination as all original claims were confirmed.
In addition to his reexamination practice, Mr. Arjomand regularly prosecutes patent applications. He concentrates his prosecution in the areas of consumer electronics, semiconductor processing, and automotive technologies. Mr. Arjomand works closely with clients in these industries to develop and manage their patent portfolios, with a particular emphasis on Japanese companies. Mr. Arjomand lived in Japan in 2008.
Mr. Arjomand received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991, where he graduated with high honors. He continued his studies at Berkeley obtaining his J.D. from Berkeley Law (Boalt Hall) in 1995.
Mr. Arjomand is admitted to practice in California and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
