Dr. Ward is a partner in the San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster LLP. He is head of the San Francisco office’s Life Sciences Patent practice where he manages a group of patent attorneys and patent agents with strong technical backgrounds. His patent practice covers various technologies and aspects of patent law related to small molecules, protein therapeutics, pharmaceuticals, antibodies, nuclear transfer cloning, gene therapy, stem cells, RNA and protein expression diagnostics, genetically engineered plants, new plant varieties and vaccines.
Dr. Ward regularly manages intellectual property due diligence efforts for venture capitalists, investment bankers, and companies involved in mergers and acquisitions.
In addition, Dr. Ward provides strategic patent counseling to numerous life sciences companies, universities and research institutions. His counseling work includes management and development of offensive and defensive patent portfolios, assessment and evaluation of patent infringement and validity issues, and providing general business advice as it pertains to patent issues. He is also the founder of the firm’s Plant Intellectual Property group and serves on the steering committee for the firm’s Cleantech practice.
Dr. Ward previously practiced in the San Francisco, California office of the law firm of Limbach & Limbach LLP.
Dr. Ward is licensed to practice law in California, in the Northern District of California, the Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Dr. Ward is a member of the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association.
Representative Matters
- Represents Novartis, Calistoga Pharmaceuticals, Expression Diagnostics Inc., Aviir Inc., Molecular Image Inc., Dole Fresh Foods, the University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Davis and the Salk Institute in life science patent prosecution matters.
- Coordinates the intellectual property due diligence, corporate acquisition, licensing and patent portfolio management for Arcadia Biosciences and Exeter Life Sciences.
- Represents numerous venture capitalists in intellectual property due diligence matters including Frazier Healthcare Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers and Alta Partners.
- Leads the International patent, plant variety, licensing, trademark and litigation efforts for the California Table Grape Commission.
