Motonori Araki is a partner of the firm’s Business Department. He has extensive experience representing major Japanese industrial, trading and service companies in their dealings in and with other Asian countries and the United States. His practice includes mergers and acquisitions, commercial transactions, intellectual property licensing and international dispute resolution, in a variety of industries including, among others, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

Mr. Araki’s M&A practice includes the representation of buyers and sellers on cross-border transactions, and covers structuring, documenting and negotiating transactions. He also has an active life science practice, representing major U.S. and Japanese pharmaceutical companies in cross-border transactions and regulatory matters.

Mr. Araki has substantial experience in representing Japanese corporations in U.S. intellectual property litigation, U.S. antitrust litigation and other dispute resolution. In these representations, he counsels Japanese corporations for litigation strategies, efficient discovery, effective pleadings and settlement negotiations. As part of his dispute resolution practice, Mr. Araki also handled the first comprehensive anti-dumping case in Japan.

Mr. Araki is the editor and author of the Japan Corporation Law Guide, published by CCH and a co-author of articles on anti-dumping laws and procedures in Japan, published in the Journal of the Japanese Institute of International Business Law (Kokusai Shoji Homu).

Mr. Araki is fluent in English in addition to his native Japanese. He received his LL.B. from Chuo University, LL.M. from Tulane University and J.D. from Georgetown University. He is admitted to the bar of the State of New York, the United States Supreme Court and Japan (GJB). He is a member of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, the Daiichi Tokyo Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.
