Satoru Matsuo is Of Counsel in the firm’s Litigation and Intellectual Property Groups, in the Tokyo office. Mr. Matsuo has experience in a broad range of technology licensing, patent litigation and other intellectual property matters as well as complex business litigation, including product liability cases. Mr. Matsuo received his LL.B. degree in 1980 from Kyoto University and his LL.M. degree in 1989 from Columbia Law School. In 1998, Mr. Matsuo joined the Litigation Department of Morrison & Foerster’s Tokyo office. From 2003 to 2005, he practiced in the firm’s New York office. Before joining Morrison & Foerster, he served as General Counsel of Uniden Corporation from March 1993 to February 1998 and worked in the Legal and Intellectual Property Group of Fujitsu Limited from April 1980 to February 1993.

As General Counsel of Uniden Corporation, Mr. Matsuo was in charge of managing all of the legal work of the company, including license negotiations and other contract, litigation and patent matters related to telecommunications technology. The license negotiations included those with Qualcomm for CDMA technology rights.

In the Legal and Intellectual Property Group of Fujitsu Limited, Mr. Matsuo handled trade issues such as antidumping investigations in the U.S. and Europe, license negotiations with, among others, major U.S. and Korean semiconductor manufacturers, various patent cases and ITC Section 337 investigations. At Fujitsu, Mr. Matsuo worked on negotiations resulting in an important patent license on very favorable terms with a major Korean semiconductor company. He also handled patent license negotiations with Texas Instruments Inc., TI-related ITC Section 337 investigations and a successful defense of Fujitsu against TI’s “Kilby Patent” in litigation in the Tokyo District Court.

Mr. Matsuo is a member of the New York Bar and a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Japan. He also translated the book Intellectual Property (Arthur R. Miller and Michael H. Davis, West Nutshell Series) into Japanese. The book was published by Bokutaku-sha in Japan in 1995.
