Louise Stoupe’s practice is focused on intellectual property and international arbitration and litigation. She is a trial lawyer, recognized expert in e-discovery and international IP law and is a highly regarded counselor on IP issues to some of the largest technology companies in the world. Ms. Stoupe also specializes in international arbitration and was one of the primary drafters of Guam’s International Arbitration law.

Ms. Stoupe is a partner in the Litigation Department. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honors) from the University of Auckland in 1996. While practicing commercial and international litigation in New Zealand, she obtained a Masters of Commercial Law (First Class Honors), graduating at the top of her class. In 1999 she was awarded the Fulbright Buddle Findlay Award to study for a Masters of Law at Duke University. Before moving to the Tokyo office in 2001, Ms. Stoupe was a member of the litigation department at Morrison & Foerster’s office in Palo Alto.

In May 2008, IP Law & Business, a sibling publication of the American Lawyer, named Louise Stoupe to its first-ever "Top 50 Under 45" list of Intellectual Property lawyers under the age 45. Ms. Stoupe was honored for her cutting-edge work for Japan-based clients. She is the second youngest person on the 50-lawyer list.

Ms. Stoupe is licensed to practice law in the State of California, England and Wales, and New Zealand.

Representative work includes:

  • Representing Funai Electric Co. Ltd in its litigation regarding DTV’s in the ITC and the Central District of California.
  • Represented Toshiba Corporation and its subsidiaries in patent and trade secret disputes including in the Eastern District of Texas and California state courts related to NAND Flash memory.
  • Representing Japanese mobile phone carriers in industry wide patent litigation in the District of Maryland.
  • Represented major Japanese bank in technology licensing dispute against US software vendor.
  • Represented Fuji Electric in various commercial disputes in California and Texas, including one of the landmark cases on service of process in Japan.
  • Presented at the HTCIA Asia Pacific Conference 2007 on E-discovery.
  • Represented clients in various confidential arbitral proceedings involving AAA, LCIA and ICC Rules.
