James Ryan is an associate in the Technology Transactions Group of the London office of Morrison & Foerster.
Dr. Ryan maintains a broad practice, advising clients in the pharmaceutical, biotech, medical devices, and medical diagnostics sectors, including charities and technology transfer offices, on general commercial and transactional matters.
Dr. Ryan takes a well-rounded, interdisciplinary approach to advising clients, combining his knowledge of science with his knowledge of the multiple areas of law that find their nexus in biotechnology and life sciences. He has experience as general counsel to a biotechnology company and has extensive business development deal experience.
Dr. Ryan assists clients to structure, negotiate, analyse, and manage strategic and complex partnering, licensing, and business development transactions and relationships. These range from foundational technology licenses, to early-stage research and drug discovery collaborations, to worldwide collaborations to develop and commercialise pharmaceutical products, to product acquisitions.
Dr. Ryan began his career as a trainee solicitor with the London office of Clifford Chance LLP in 2002 and qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales in August 2004. After obtaining a BSc (Hons) in 1997, and a PhD in Molecular Biology in 2000, both from the University of St. Andrews, Dr. Ryan completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and the Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
