Morrison & Foerster has extensive experience representing clients throughout the media sector, including both traditional
and online media. The firm’s clients include Internet service providers, web site designers, print and online media outlets,
television and radio broadcasters, cable and satellite broadcasters and advertising agencies.
Since the early 1990s, the firm has advised hundreds of companies on establishing web sites, developing and licensing content
(including use in both static and dynamic media), syndicating content among online service providers, as well as issues specifically
raised by interactivity, e-commerce, rights clearance (including webcasting rights), privacy and other existing and proposed
governmental regulations, and other issues unique to the online environment.
Morrison & Foerster’s Washington, D.C.-based communications law practice regularly represents media clients regarding Federal
telecommunications laws and regulations. The practice is both regulatory and transactional in nature, providing counsel to
broadcast, cable, and satellite clients on issues arising during the production of television and radio programs that pertain
to compliance with the Federal Communications Act, FCC regulations, and privacy and libel laws. The firm counsels and represents
the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association of America (the trade association for the direct-to-home satellite
industry) in rulemakings before the FCC and in court, and provides counsel and ongoing representation to cable programmers.
The firm’s representation of print publishers extends to both transactional and litigation matters, regarding both offline
and online issues. Morrison & Foerster has represented print publishers in acquisitions, financings, libel allegations, fair
trade practices, royalty payments, distribution, invasion of privacy, courtroom access, and other matters.
