Washington, D.C., -- July 19, 2001 -- Morrison & Foerster LLP is pleased to announce that Margaret L. Tobey was installed on July 1 as president of the Federal Communications Bar Association ("FCBA"). Ms. Tobey, a partner in the firm's Washington, D.C. office since 1997, will serve a one-year term. She succeeds outgoing president Anne Swanson of Dow, Lohnes & Albertson.
The FCBA is the leading professional organization for communications attorneys, with over 3,400 members, representing most of the 50 states, several territories and many foreign countries. Prior to Ms. Tobey's election as FCBA president, she served as secretary of the organization. She also served a three-year term as an elected member of the FCBA's Executive Committee and a trustee of the FCBA Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization affiliated with the FCBA. She served as chairperson of the FCBA Foundation from 1993 to 1994.
Ms. Tobey is a member of the firm's global Communications Practice Group. She has practiced exclusively in the communications law area since 1982. Her practice encompasses a variety of domestic and international communications matters, including licensing, regulatory compliance, transactions, and litigation involving radio and television stations, common carriers, providers of new technology services, equipment manufacturers, and lenders to the communications industry.
Before joining Morrison & Foerster in 1997, Ms. Tobey was a partner with Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, L.L.P. (1992-1997) and Sidley & Austin (1990-1992), where she also specialized in communications law. From 1981 to 1987, she was associated with Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. She clerked for the Honorable Roger Robb of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1980 to 1981.
Ms. Tobey graduated, with high distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1980 and is a member of the Order of the Coif. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Iowa Law Review from 1979 to 1980. She also received her M.A. in 1980 and her B.A. in 1974 from the University of Iowa.
