Having practiced in both Washington, D.C. and Brussels, Jon Gowdy is one of the few attorneys who can provide clients with expert advice on U.S., EU, and international antitrust and competition law issues.
Merger Expertise. Mr. Gowdy has significant experience advising parties to large M&A transactions on antitrust notification requirements and substantive competitive issues.
- Mr. Gowdy has secured antitrust clearances for hundreds of transactions notified to U.S., EU, and other international antitrust agencies with active enforcement regimes, such as Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan.
- Mr. Gowdy has represented clients, such as AirTran, Intel, Oracle, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Inamed and Tanox, in transactions subject to in-depth reviews and investigations by enforcement agencies. He has represented clients in oral hearings on contested mergers before the European Commission, and when necessary, negotiated remedial settlements with relevant agencies to resolve competitive concerns.
- Mr. Gowdy regularly advises customers and competitors of merging parties in responding to inquiries from antitrust agencies. He has assisted firms that are purchasing businesses subject to divestiture requirements with obtaining necessary approvals from domestic and international antitrust agencies.
Counseling and Litigation Expertise. Mr. Gowdy regularly counsels clients on antitrust and competition law issues relating to joint ventures, pricing practices, distribution or marketing arrangements, license agreements, and standard setting activities. He has experience representing clients involved in cartel and other non-merger investigations or litigation. He closely follows and has written extensively on China's Anti-Monopoly Law and related enforcement actions.
Industry Expertise. Over the past 14 years, Mr. Gowdy’s antitrust work has provided him with a deep understanding of the business and competitive issues facing firms in several high-technology sectors, including computer hardware, software and storage; life sciences; Internet media and services; semiconductor products and manufacturing equipment; and telecommunications equipment and services. He also has substantial experience with clients in the consumer products, energy, transportation and financial services industries.
In-House and Government Experience. Earlier in his career, Mr. Gowdy worked for a venture firm that managed a $30 million investment fund and provided management consulting services to early-stage technology companies. He understands the perspective of in-house lawyers and the value of providing practical, timely and cost efficient advice. During law school, Mr. Gowdy worked for the Merger Task Force within the Antitrust Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as Managing Editor of the Florida Law Review, and was elected to the Order of the Coif.
