Randy Omid is an associate in the San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster. His practice focuses on intellectual property matters, including patent preparation and prosecution, patent litigation support, and patent reexamination.
Mr. Omid received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he was a member of the Thurston Society and was elected to the Order of the Coif. During law school, he served as an editor of the Hastings Law Journal and president of the Hastings Intellectual Property and Cyber Law Society. Mr. Omid is a seven-time recipient of the CALI Award for Excellence, including awards in Patent Prosecution, Intellectual Property Licensing, and Cyber Law.
Prior to law school, Mr. Omid worked as a senior engineer at a Fortune 500 wireless telecommunications company. During his six years of industry experience, he worked on a wide range of technologies. Mr. Omid developed and hand-optimized low-level assembly GSM modem DSP program code for real-time execution on multiple revisions of DSP architecture. This required an in-depth understanding of the DSP hardware to ensure completion of signal processing within strict time constraints and compliance with GSM standards. Mr. Omid was also involved in the development and integration of wireless LAN technology into multiple CDMA and GSM cellular mobile chipsets.
In addition to wireless technology experience, Mr. Omid has industry experience in the development and commercialization of embedded multimedia and file systems. He led an analysis of software, firmware, and hardware implementations of multimedia encoders and decoders to identify and remedy vulnerabilities that may be maliciously exploited. This included analyzing image, audio, and video multimedia codecs for security risks and developing automated testing that isolated memory corruption by intelligently introducing bit-level errors into multimedia input streams. In the area of embedded file systems, Mr. Omid has done extensive testing and analysis of NAND and NOR non-volatile memory chips and embedded file systems to identify real-world program-erase cycle limits, transfer rates, and bit error rates.
Mr. Omid received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with a focus on wireless communication systems from the University of California, San Diego. He earned his master's degree in electrical and computer engineering, focusing on image and signal processing, from the University of California, San Diego.
Mr. Omid joined Morrison & Foerster in 2009 as a summer associate and law clerk.
