Press Release

SAN FRANCISCO – November 5, 2012 – The Morrison & Foerster Foundation has committed $100,000 to fund disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall near Atlantic City, New Jersey on Oct. 29. The Foundation is donating $50,000 to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, and $50,000 to the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund.

“It’s been heartbreaking for all of us to watch the devastation unfold following Hurricane Sandy’s rampage on the East Coast. This has impacted our MoFo family directly, and our communities,” said Paul Friedman, a member of the firm executive committee who chairs the Foundation. “One of our Foundation’s primary goals is to contribute directly to the communities in which we work, so we wanted to act swiftly to assist with immediate disaster relief, which will help lessen the burdens of so many impacted by this disaster.”

The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that facilitates innovative public-private partnerships throughout the city’s five boroughs. One hundred percent of donations to its hurricane relief effort are funding organizations that meet immediate aid needs, including food, water and hygiene supplies, as well as long-term relief and restoration efforts. The United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund was established to address the near-term and long-term recovery needs of individuals, families and communities along the Eastern Seaboard that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy’s devastation. Contributions to the Fund will be used by local United Ways in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia to address hurricane recovery needs in communities that FEMA has declared disaster areas. In the U.S., Hurricane Sandy affected at least 24 states, from Florida to New England, with tropical storm force winds stretching far inland and mountain snows in West Virginia. A destructive storm surge in New York City Oct. 29 flooded numerous streets, tunnels, and subway lines in Lower Manhattan, Staten Island, Coney Island, the Rockaways and other areas, and cut off electricity to parts of New York City and its suburbs. Severe damage occurred in Staten Island and New Jersey, particularly in communities along the Jersey Shore.

The donation comes after The Morrison & Foerster Foundation announced last week its largest set of grants ever in honor of its 25th anniversary. The charitable program awarded $1.5 million to youth charities across the U.S. designed to support programs serving disadvantaged young people.
