Creating Sustainable Platforms for Women Leaders
Since its inception in 2012, MoFo’s Summit for Women In-House Counsel has brought nearly 700 women attorneys together for a day of enlightenment and empowerment. This year’s event, held at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn, New York, welcomed over 200 women for a day-long, inspirational program that has been a pillar in MoFo’s long-standing commitment to championing the advancement of women.
The theme of this year’s event, “Creating Sustainable Platforms for Women Leaders,” influenced a program of curated content for current and future generations of female leaders, designed to grow a community of empowered women in the legal profession. In the spirit of creating a sustainable environment, invitations were extended to mentees of senior in-house counsel and senior east coast associates at the firm for the first time in the Summit’s history.
The agenda featured a mix of point-counterpoint conversations, engaging panel sessions, and substantive breakout discussions, moderated by influential, industry-leading women.
Deanne Maynard and NAACP Legal Defense Fund President Sherrilyn Ifill kicked off the event with a fast-paced discussion of hot-button issues facing the Supreme Court in the October 2018 Term as well as a recap of high points from the last Term.

Following “Supreme Court Highlights,” the “Women in Positions of Power” series offered two tracks for varied seniority levels. Cara Hale Alter, communications guru and author of The Credibility Code, led a discussion for the next generation on projecting confidence and competence to build leadership presence, while Carrie Cohen moderated a discussion among seasoned board members Liza Landsman (Veritiv and Choice Hotels International), Jane Sherburne (Teledyne Technologies and HSBC North America Holdings), and Brande Stellings (Vestry Laight LLC) on opportunities and challenges in climbing the professional ladder.
Jamie Levitt moderates the “Women General Counsel Today” session, featuring panelists Lucy Fato of AIG, Elisa Garcia of Macy’s, Kathy Leo of Chobani, Barbara Levi Mager of Sandoz, and Jill Simeone of Etsy.
Prior to a networking lunch, attendees gathered again for the highly regarded “Women General Counsel Today” panel moderated by Jamie Levitt, which featured seasoned general counsel from AIG, Chobani, Etsy, Macy’s, and Sandoz. Speakers shared their experiences and best practices on growing professionally and paving the path to empower the next generation.
Afternoon programming consisted of eight different practice and industry-specific interactive breakout sessions led by MoFo attorneys and guest speakers. Attendees participated in live polling and roundtable discussions on topics such as The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, blockchain technology, legal ethics, workplace misconduct, impact investing, investigations, and trends in consumer litigation.
The day’s activities were rounded out with a thought-provoking keynote by American journalist Gail Collins about the trajectory of women in America and her adventures on covering the Administration. Gail provided a funny and fascinating tour of how we got to this present moment and celebrated how we’ve turned around Western civilizations’ gender roles and rules.
This inspirational and empowering day would not have been possible without the leadership of the 2018 Summit co-chairs, Jamie Levitt and Jennifer Marines, along with the work of countless others.
