Catherine Canby is an associate in the Intellectual Property Litigation Group based in the firm’s Austin office. Drawing from her electrical engineering background and experience as a district court clerk, Catherine focuses her practice primarily on patent litigation and trade secret disputes. She has been involved in complex matters across a wide range of technologies, including consumer electronics, cybersecurity software, and semiconductor devices.

Catherine has played a key role throughout various phases of intellectual property litigation, including fact discovery, case-dispositive motion practice, and trial and witness preparation. She has practiced in forums across Texas as well as federal district courts throughout the United States and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Prior to joining Morrison Foerster, Catherine clerked in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas for the Honorable Alan D Albright.

Before her clerkship, Catherine was as an associate at a global firm, where she was part of a trial team that secured a complete defense victory against a $4 billion patent damages claim targeting semiconductor manufacturing technology. Prior to attending law school, Catherine gained industry experience working as an Engineering Project Manager in Silicon Valley.

Catherine earned a J.D. with Honors from the University of Texas School of Law, where she served as a Notes Editor for the Texas Law Review and as a Teaching Quizmaster for the legal writing department. She also was a recipient of the Beck Award for Excellence in Legal Writing and Dean’s Achievement Awards in Federal Courts and Persuasive Writing and Advocacy. Catherine graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University.
