Gene Novikov has litigated a wide range of high‑stakes cases for technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical companies of all sizes, with a focus on patent, trade secret, and consumer class action matters.

Gene has significant experience with matters involving organic chemistry, genetic sequencing, video games, computer security, mobile device hardware, data compression, and materials science, among others. Recently, Gene helped secure a $178 million patent infringement verdict for a Bay Area drug development company against a major pharmaceutical multinational, and he won a defense verdict for a major telecom company in a trade secret matter. He was also instrumental to a complete summary judgment victory for two video game giants in a patent case, and he helped secure an “exceptional case” fees award against a patent assertion entity following another summary judgment win.

Gene’s ability to explain complicated issues in simple terms for judges and juries has led to recognition by regional and national publications, including The American Lawyer, Daily Journal, and Benchmark Litigation, among others.

Gene served in two overseas tours as a diplomat with the U.S. State Department in Nigeria and Pakistan, and served as a Regional Legal Advisor with the U.S. Agency for International Development in Washington, D.C. and in Ghana. He was formerly an associate at another major law firm where he helped obtain two jury verdicts of both non-infringement and invalidity for patent defendants.

Gene earned a J.D. from The University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he served as an articles editor on The Law Review. Gene externed for Judge Joseph J. Farnan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware and taught constitutional law to undergraduates.
