Jeff is a patent attorney in Morrison Foerster’s Patent Strategy + Prosecution practice. He advises startups and large companies on patent strategy across a range of technologies, including medical technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), fintech, autonomous vehicles, and satellite systems.

His current practice is particularly active in medical technology and AI/ML. In the medical technology space, Jeff has prepared and prosecuted patent applications directed to noninvasive imaging systems, machine learning systems for biomarker and disease-marker detection, surgical tools, intravascular lithotripsy catheters, and vascular implants. His artificial intelligence practice includes innovations related to autonomous vehicle systems, agentic AI systems, deepfake detection systems, biomarker detection, and disease-modeling platforms, among others.

Jeff’s work also includes post-grant matters before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Two examples of his completed post-grant matters are the following:

  • IPR 2024-01381: Successfully defended patent owner, with all challenged claims found not invalid after trial.
  • IPR 2024-01380: Achieved a favorable outcome for the patent owner, with amended claims found not invalid.

Jeff received his J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was the recipient of the Leon Robbin Patent Award as the top performing student in the graduating class in courses related to patent law. During law school, Jeff served as executive online editor for the Georgetown Law Journal and as a law fellow for the first-year legal practice: writing and analysis course. Jeff also worked as a summer associate and a law clerk at Morrison Foerster while pursuing his law degree.

Before law school, Jeff earned an MBA, with distinction, and a B.S. in mechanical engineering, with honors, both from the University of Louisville. As an MBA candidate, Jeff interned with a financial services firm where he supported an investment banking team’s mergers and acquisitions and business valuation work. During his undergraduate studies, Jeff competed on a nationally recognized rocket engineering and design team, where he was responsible for the mechanical redesign of a variable drag inducing system and structural analysis of vehicle components. Jeff also completed three mechanical engineering co-op rotations with a gas and electric utility company, where he gained hands-on experience with a variety of power generation and emission control technologies.
