Leveraging deep knowledge and experience developed from more than seven years as a biologist and technical writer, Maggie Zhang focuses her work on patent drafting and prosecution, with an emphasis on molecular biology, genetics, and bioengineering.

Prior to joining MoFo, Maggie was the Lead Research Analyst at Catalyst Healthcare Consulting, where she developed creative strategies to improve regulatory efficiency for healthcare technologies in all stages of the development life cycle. She also conducted competitive analysis to assess how differentiating factors of products can be maximally leveraged to gain regulatory and/or financial incentives from the FDA, and crafted FDA-facing arguments for products’ novelty and potential to address unmet medical need.

Maggie received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Chicago, where her research focused on dynamic genetic requirements for Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron gut colonization. Her studies incorporated functional genetics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics datasets into a single model to understand the genetic requirements for bacteria colonizing the murine gut. She has also constructed mutant libraries and more than 100 vectors for model/non‑model organisms.

Maggie holds a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. As an undergraduate student, Maggie studied the genetic determinants of magnetosome formation in a non-model bacterium and bioengineered tools to transfer genomic islands from Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 to exogenous recipients.

Maggie is fluent in Japanese and proficient in Mandarin.
