Monika Weisman is an associate in Morrison Foerster’s National Security Practice Group and based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

Monika’s practice focuses on regulatory compliance, investigations, and enforcement matters primarily related to anti-money laundering (AML) and economic sanctions, with an emphasis on the financial services sector. She counsels clients on a complex array of regulations issued by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and state and federal banking and securities supervisors.

Prior to joining Morrison Foerster, Monika was an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of a prominent international law firm, where her work involved responding to federal agency enforcement actions, submitting licensing requests and voluntary self-disclosures, and helping clients develop, implement, and enhance effective compliance programs. She also provided strategic counseling and crisis management services to clients facing congressional scrutiny.

In 2022, Monika was selected by the German Marshall Fund of the United States to attend the Young Professionals Summit at the Brussels Forum in recognition of her commitment to transatlantic security and economic cooperation.

Monika received a J.D. and an M.A. in international relations from the University of Chicago. While in law school, Monika gained varied experience as an intern at the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York; as a law clerk at the University of Chicago Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic; as a research assistant to Tom Ginsburg, professor of international law and political science; and as a volunteer with the Stahili Foundation and the International Refugee Assistance Project.

As a first-generation student and former Sponsors for Educational Opportunity Law Fellow, Monika is passionate about efforts to diversify the legal profession. She maintains an active pro bono practice and recently represented a U.S. citizen wrongfully detained in Russia.
