Sophia Poirier is an associate in Morrison Foerster’s Austin office and a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation Group.

Sophia Poirier is a registered patent attorney with B.S. and M.S. degrees in biomedical engineering. Sophia focuses her practice on patent litigation and post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), particularly in the life sciences, pharmaceutical, medical device, and technology sectors.

Sophia has experience representing pharmaceutical and technology clients in patent disputes and post-grant proceedings before the USPTO. Her experience includes infringement and invalidity analyses, pre-suit assessments, expert preparation, and intellectual property due diligence in connection with corporate transactions. She also has experience with patent preparation and prosecution, including patent drafting, prosecuting across multiple jurisdictions, and patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.

Prior to beginning her legal career, Sophia worked in the medical device industry. As a regulatory affairs specialist, she supported the introduction of new medical devices in international markets and worked with international teams to maintain product portfolios and assess the regulatory impact of engineering changes. She also previously worked in medical device research and development, where she researched patents and prior art, conducted studies involving medical device prototypes, and contributed to published research.

Sophia earned her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law, her M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami, and her B.S., cum laude, in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami.
