Yoshiya Usami is a partner of Morrison Foerster Law Offices. He has advised and represented clients in a wide range of matters, including general corporate, commercial disputes, cross-border transactions, labor and employment, licensing, and joint ventures. His practice puts particular emphasis on antitrust/competition law, including cartel defense, investigations of unilateral conduct, and antitrust compliance.
Yoshiya serves as a non-governmental advisor to the International Competition Network and a country representative of the International Committee of the Antitrust Law Section of the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Japan Competition Law Forum.
He is a regular speaker at lectures and training sessions for bar associations and business enterprises. In 2025, he participated in the “Ex-Ante Regulation of Digital Markets in Asia” panel hosted by the American Bar Association where he addressed recent legislative and regulatory trends concerning the digital market in Japan. Yoshiya also provides training sessions for business enterprises on the Anti-Monopoly Act, Fair Trade Act (f.k.a. Subcontract Act), and Freelancers Act.
He frequently contributes to legal literature and is an editor of “Joint Research and Development Agreements” (2025), a comprehensive resource detailing the practical considerations in joint R&D contracts.
Yoshiya is a bengoshi admitted to practice in Japan, a member of Daini Tokyo Bar Association, and a qualified lawyer in New York. He received his LL.B. from Tokyo Metropolitan University, LL.M. from Cornell Law School, and Ph.D. from Kobe University. Yoshiya completed training at the Legal Training and Research Institute of the Supreme Court of Japan (57th trainee).
