Client Alert

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has scheduled a public hearing on May 8, 2024, to hear stakeholders’ views on the Commission’s priorities for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Held annually, this hearing allows the Commission to learn from industry members, experts, and consumer advocates while it starts to develop priorities and goals for the next two years. The hearing also gives industry members early insights into what products may be subject to new or updated safety standards in the near future.

Many of the products highlighted during the 2023 hearing ended up on CPSC’s list of priorities included in its fiscal year 2024 Operating Plan. Participants at last year’s hearing included U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Nancy Cowles (Executive Director of Kids in Danger), Courtney Griffin (Director of Consumer Product Safety, Consumer Federation of America), Karin Athanas (Executive Director of TIC Council Americas), and many others. These participants asked the Commission to take action on a number of products, including water beads, laundry packets, unstable furniture, off-highway vehicles, nursing pillows, and infant loungers. CPSC has already proposed or announced its intent to issue safety standards for many of these products. Watch a full recording of the 2023 hearing.

Those interested in providing their views to the Commission on May 8, 2024, can submit a request to make an oral presentation (in person or remotely) by emailing the text of their presentation and any written comments to cpsc-os@cpsc.gov. Requests to participate must be submitted before 5:00 p.m. ET on April 24, 2024. Additional details on the hearing and a video link to watch the hearing can be found on the CPCS website.

We will provide another alert following the hearing with a summary of the key issues and product categories raised during the hearing.
