Dr. Bill Tian’s practice includes areas of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and chemistry, with an emphasis on small molecule pharmaceuticals and medicinal chemistry. Dr. Tian specializes in landscape assessment, drafting, and prosecution of complex small molecule patent applications in the U.S. and abroad. He also has experience in patent portfolio evaluation and IP due diligence, including patentability, freedom-to-operate and invalidity investigations. Dr. Tian works with biopharmaceutical companies ranging from start-ups to big pharma in developing patent strategies and building strong IP portfolios. Dr. Tian also advises clients on patent strategy involving cross-border inventions and assists in IP due diligence in U.S./China cross-border transactions.

Dr. Tian has over ten years of experience in pharmaceutical R&D, worked with two pharmaceutical companies as a medicinal chemist, in discovery and development of small molecule drug candidates for treatment of cancer, viral, bacterial, and fungal infections, osteoporosis, and conditions affected by G-protein coupled receptors. Dr. Tian received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of California, San Diego, where he was a William von Eggers Doering’s China-U.S. Chemistry Graduate Program (CGP) Fellow Student. Dr. Tian also conducted postdoctoral research at University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University. Dr. Tian is an author of numerous scientific publications and inventor on multiple patents and patent applications.

Dr. Tian received his J.D. from the Santa Clara University School of Law, where he was a symposium editor for the Santa Clara Computer & High Technology Law Journal. Dr. Tian is admitted to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office and is a member of the California State Bar.
