Mr. Yang is a member of the Intellectual Property Practice Group, resident in the Los Angeles office. His practice focuses on patents, including patent litigation, reexamination/post-grant practice, supervision of prosecution, as well as leading due diligence of patent assets. He also has experience working abroad at various locations throughout Asia, as well as managing complex patent litigation matters in China.

Mr. Yang has served as leading technical attorney in numerous patent litigation matters (in the U.S. and in China) and is experienced with various kinds of technology, including semiconductor processing, IC design, display and graphics technology, wireless communications, location-based systems and applications (including GPS), video and audio processing, encryption, UAVs and autonomous driving systems, and consumer electronics generally.

Mr. Yang was a judicial extern to the Honorable Gladys Kessler of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and later to the Honorable Pauline Newman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Aside from his patent practice, Mr. Yang has lectured at local high schools on the prevention of domestic violence and abusive relationships. He has received recognition from the California Public Counsel Law Center for his contribution of free legal services to foster children, and is a repeat recipient of the Wiley W. Manuel Award from the State Bar of California in recognition of his voluntary legal services to the local community.

Mr. Yang is admitted to practice in California and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Yang is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

China and U.S. Smartphone Litigation
Represented the largest smartphone maker in the U.S. in connection with several patent litigation matters in the U.S. and in China. Matters involved various different technologies including location technology, voice-recognition technology, and messaging/network technology.
Smartphone Inter Partes Reviews
Drafted and filed reexamination requested and inter-partes petitions in connection with various patent litigation matters, including inter-parties petitions on behalf of the largest smartphone maker in the U.S.
Digital Empire v. Compal Electronics et al. (Southern District of California)
Represented Compal Electronics in successfully defending a patent infringement action related to touch-panel display. Case was dismissed with prejudice. Attorney fees and costs awarded.
DJI v. Yuneec International el. Al. (Central District of California)
Represented Yuneec in connection with patent infringement action related to UAV technology. Filed IPR petition and case was dismissed after settlement.
ADC Technology Inc. v. Verizon Wireless (Northern District of Illinois)
Represented Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action related to mobile communication devices. The case was successfully settled.
Child Protect LLC v. Verizon Wireless (Eastern District of Texas)
Represented Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to wireless communications technology. The case was successfully settled.
Digital Choice v. Changhong Electric Co. (China), et al. (Eastern District of Texas)
Represented Changhong Electric Co., the largest Chinese consumer electronics company, in defending a patent infringement suit related to digital television. Case was successfully settled with the case voluntarily dismissed against Changhong and no money paid to the plaintiff.
Guardian Location Inc. v. Verizon Wireless (Eastern District of Texas)
Represented Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to location tracking technology. The case was successfully settled.
EMSAT Advanced Geo-Location Technology, et al. v. Verizon Wireless (Northern District of Ohio)
Currently represents Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to telephone network technology. Representation includes preparation and filing of reexamination requests.
Levine v. Verizon Wireless (Eastern District of Texas)
Currently defending Verizon Wireless in connection with patent infringement action directed to location-based technology.
Tendler Cellular of Texas LLC v. Verizon Wireless (Eastern District of Texas)
Represented Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to GPS technology. Case was successfully settled.
TracBeam v. Verizon Wireless (Eastern District of Texas)
Currently represents Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to cellular location-based application and platforms.
Traffic Information LLC v. Verizon Wireless (Eastern District of Texas)
Represented Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to navigation technology. Case has been successfully settled.
Vehicle IP LLC v. Networks in Motion (Eastern District of Wisconsin)
Represented Networks in Motion in defending against a patent infringement action related to server-based navigation technology. Secured a victory on summary judgment of non-infringement.
Vehicle IP LLC v. TeleCommunication Systems, et al. (District of Delaware)
Currently represents TeleCommunication Systems and Verizon Wireless in defending against a patent infringement action directed to vehicle navigation technology.
Japanese Image-Solutions Company
Performed IP-asset due diligence for a major Japanese image-solutions company in connection with the acquisition of another major Japanese printing-solutions company.
Major U.S. Investment Bank
Performed IP-asset due diligence for a major U.S. investment bank in connection with the private placement of investments with a Chinese solar-technology company.
Major Japanese Electronics Manufacturer
Performed IP-asset due diligence for a major Japanese electronics manufacturer in connection with the acquisition of a Chinese battery manufacturer.
Major U.S. Technology Company
Performed IP-asset evaluation for a major U.S. technology company in connection with a multi-billion dollar patent auction.
U.S. Venture Capital Firm
Performed IP-asset due diligence for a U.S. venture capital firm in connection with investments with a U.S. system-on-chip company.
