Jannis is a senior associate at Morrison & Foerster’s German office in Berlin and a member of our Technology Transactions Group. He focuses on advising domestic and international clients on contract law, copyrights, and e-commerce, as well as related transactions, with an emphasis on the internet, media, and technology sectors.

Online platforms, e-commerce, digital content distribution and emerging technologies like Blockchain and the Internet of Things – Jannis’ practice is aligned with his personal enthusiasm for technology, the digital economy, and the growth-oriented businesses that define it. He advises both German and international clients, many active in the internet, media, and technology sectors, on a broad range of contract law issues and commercial transactions, as well as legal questions related to copyright, consumer protection compliance, payments regulation, and e-commerce.

Jannis is also part of Morrison & Foerster’s Berlin compliance and internal investigations team, where he focuses on drafting and negotiating related documents and agreements, as well as conducting internal investigations.

Jannis holds a dual degree in law and economics from the University of Bayreuth and a master's degree from Harvard Law School. He is admitted to practice in Germany and in New York State.

Representative Experience

  • Advised a private equity client on substantial investment into the mining of Bitcoin and other Blockchain-based cryptocurrencies, focusing on the negotiation of hosting and (software as a service) mining agreements with a major crypto mining service provider.
  • Adapted existing contract templates for a U.S. based electronic signature provider for use in Germany. Developed and administered local law training session for in-house teams. Ongoing support in individual contract negotiations.
  • Ongoing advice for an influencer marketing ad tech company on contracts and related issues.
  • Ongoing advice for a strategic brand advertising agency on agreements with producers, artists, and influencers, including drafting such agreements and agreement templates from scratch.
  • Ongoing advice for a Berlin-based company builder/incubator on several early stage, innovative, app-based b2c business models in the mobility sector. Advice on e-commerce and consumer laws. Drafting of terms & conditions for apps and online platforms.
  • Prepared developer and consultant agreements for international use for an international mobile games developer. Retained and instructed local counsel in several jurisdictions for local law reviews. Reviewed and summarized results of local counsel reviews for the client.
  • Drafted full set of legal documents for event platform startup. Provided both consumer-facing end user terms & conditions and agreement templates to use with event organizers and other suppliers. Advised on consumer protection and payment regulation compliance.
  • Ongoing advice to Daimler AG regarding diesel emissions.
  • Advised a German bank with complex D&O insurance settlements related to claims against several former directors.


  • Morrison & Foerster’s Tokyo office to support the technology transactions team with large commercial and M&A transactions in the life sciences and IT sectors.
  • Secondment with global cloud computing/ infrastructure-as-a-service provider’s European legal team. Supported sales and marketing teams with contracts, regulatory and data privacy advice.
  • Two secondment periods to a Swiss-based global medical devices company to support in-house commercial counsel with negotiation and administration of distribution and direct sales contracts for medical devices and pharmaceuticals in several European countries, the Middle East, and Asia.

Pro Bono Service

  • Participated in the MoFo Refugee Guardianship Program: Took on responsibility as legal guardian of an unaccompanied minor from Afghanistan as part of the firm’s effort to support individuals, NGOs and public services during the European refugee crisis.
  • Advised and represented holocaust survivors and their families in several proceedings against the German public pension fund. Part of a team of attorneys at the firm’s Berlin office who together have won substantial pension amounts both in and out of court.
