Joyce Liou is a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. Ms. Liou focuses her practice on intellectual property litigation, domestic and international trademark prosecution, copyright and trademark enforcement, and domain name arbitration.
Ms. Liou has litigated trademark, copyright, and design patent infringement cases, as well as proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. In addition to litigation, Ms. Liou advises clients on complex intellectual property issues such as counterfeit and gray market goods. Her clients come from a wide range of industries and fields, including wireless networking, consumer electronics, computer software, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, plants, and food products.
Ms. Liou received her J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School in 2010. While attending law school, she externed for the Honorable William H. Alsup of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Ms. Liou received her B.A. in economics and political science with distinction from the University of California, Berkeley in 2007.
Synopsys, Inc. v. Ubiquiti Networks, Inc. et al. (Northern District of California). Defended Ubiquiti Networks in a Digital Millennium Copyright Act case involving electronic design automation software.
One World Foods, Inc. v. Stubb’s Austin Restaurant Company LC et al. (Western District of Texas). Represented One World Foods in a trademark infringement case against Stubb’s Austin Restaurant regarding the unlicensed use of STUBB’S for restaurants and music venues. The case settled on favorable terms and resulted in a stipulated permanent injunction.
McCormick & Company, Incorporated v. Badia Spices, Inc. (District of Maryland). Represented McCormick in a trade dress infringement case against Badia Spices regarding its use of McCormick’s OLD BAY packaging design. The case settled on favorable terms.
Novadaq Technologies, Inc. v. Karl Storz GmbH and Karl Storz Endoscopy America, Inc. (Northern District of California). Represented Novadaq in a trademark infringement case against Karl Storz regarding medical fluorescence imaging technology. The case settled on favorable terms.
MI Technologies, Inc. v. Electrified Discounters, Inc. (District of Connecticut). Represented MI Technologies in a counterfeiting and trademark infringement case against Electrified Discounters. Obtained a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction stopping the sale and distribution of counterfeit OSRAM lamps. Reached a favorable settlement of all claims.
IAC Search & Media, Inc. v. Social Idealogy, Inc. (Northern District of California). Represented IAC Search & Media in a trademark infringement suit involving mobile software applications. The case settled on favorable terms.
Ubiquiti Networks, Inc. v. Kozumi USA, et al. (Northern District of California). Represented Ubiquiti Networks in a counterfeiting and trademark, trade dress, and copyright infringement action involving counterfeit wireless networking devices. Obtained a worldwide temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against defendants, who settled with stipulation to the entry of a permanent injunction. The case was recognized by the Daily Journal as a “Top Plaintiff Verdict by Impact” for 2013.
Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) Matters. (Trademark Trial and Appeal Board). Represented ACI-NA and affiliated North American airports in opposition proceedings involving Anheuser-Busch’s applications to register airport code trademarks. Each proceeding settled in ACI-NA’s favor.
