Ken Newton applies his experience as a researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to advising clients in multiple aspects of patent strategy. His experience in delivering completed instruments starting from ground-level design informs his ability to view a patent portfolio at a macroscopic level while focusing on the operation of individual components that make up a larger system. Mr. Newton has patent prosecution and counseling experience for clients in the areas of commercial electronics hardware, mobile devices, semiconductor devices, user interface applications, optics, image sensors, cellular communication, automotive guidance, power supply, and microwave technologies. In addition, he has prepared noninfringement and invalidity defenses in cases before the International Trade Commission and in the Eastern District of Texas, experience he leverages in evaluating the strength of patent portfolios in connection with technology transactions.
Prior to law school, Mr. Newton worked for more than five years as a member of the technical staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mr. Newton’s focus was primarily on CMOS image sensors for digital cameras, which have been used for both ground and flight applications. He participated in end-to-end development of image sensors and the associated camera system or instrument incorporating the image-sensor design. For example, he designed analog circuitry, digital control-circuitry using hardware description languages, and printed circuit boards. As part of producing customer-ready products, he performed debug, re-design, characterization, calibration, and life testing of image sensors and cameras. His experience also includes the qualification and integration of components into scientific instruments for space-flight applications.
As a member of the Electronics, Software, and Telecommunications Patent Group, Mr. Newton drafts, prosecutes, and advises on U.S. and non-U.S. patent applications in a wide range of technology fields. Using this experience with image-sensor design, he provides patent prosecution and counseling advice related to sensing arrays for user inputs to consumer electronics devices. He is also interested in the areas of computer architecture and video game technology.
Mr. Newton holds a J.D. from the University of California Los Angeles School of Law. He received his M.S. and B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California.
