As a member of our Tokyo Corporate department, Leo’s practice focuses on cross-border M&A, strategic alliances, and joint ventures covering a range of industries, including technology, energy and infrastructure. 

Leo is recommended in the 2022 edition of The Legal 500 Asia Pacific for Japan: Projects and Energy.

Leo received his J.D. and LL.M. degrees from Columbia University School of Law where he was a Stone Scholar and received his LL.B. from the Tecnológico de Monterrey where he graduated first in his class. Leo is fluent in Spanish.

Currently, Leo is a part-time lecturer on international contracts at Keio University Law School.

  • Represented Toshiba on the $18 billion sale of its subsidiary Toshiba Memory Corporation to a consortium led by Bain Capital.

  • Represented TDK in the formation of its $3 billion joint venture with Qualcomm to provide industry leading radio frequency front-end (RFFE) modules and RF filters for mobile devices and for other fast-growing business segments, such as drones, robotics and automotive applications.

  • Represented Tokyo Gas in its investment in a joint venture with ENGIE to develop and operate two wind projects and four solar photovoltaic projects located in Mexico, with an expected aggregate generating capacity of 720MW.

  • Represented Sumitomo Corporation on its investment in Light Rail Manila Corporation, the operator of the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1.

  • Represented SoftBank in its investment in OneWeb, which is building a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites to enable global broadband access.

    Represented SoftBank and GungHo Online Entertainment in their joint purchase of a majority interest in Finnish mobile game company, Supercell. Also represented SoftBank on its subsequent acquisition of GungHo’s interest in Supercell.

    Represented SoftBank in its investment in Bear Robotics, a startup in the robotics and artificial intelligence space, which has developed a robot enabled by artificial intelligence that is able to autonomously navigate restaurants and perform work traditionally done by waitstaff.

    Represented SoftBank in its investment in Accel Robotics, a startup developing perception technology that authenticates shoppers allowing them to "grab and go" and skip the checkout system.

  • Represented Alibaba’s independent committee in Alibaba’s acquisition of a 33% equity interest in Ant Financial, China’s leading financial services company.

  • Represented GLP Pte. Ltd. in its $1.4 billion joint ventures with Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, China Investment Corporation, and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation for the acquisition of 40 logistics properties in Brazil from funds managed by Prosperitas.

  • Represented Mitsui in its acquisition of a 25% interest in the Caserones copper and molybdenum mining project in the Atacama region of Chile.

    Represented Mitsui in its sale of a 30% equity interest in five gas-fired combined cycle power stations in Mexico and a related gas pipeline company to Chubu Electric and Tohoku Electric.
