Among Europe’s best-known privacy lawyers, Lokke Moerel specializes in data protection and information/communications technology law. “An authority on data protection matters” (Chambers Europe 2014), Ms. Moerel is consistently ranked as a leader in data protection law in Chambers Global and Legal 500.
Ms. Moerel advises companies on global information handling governance, strategy and compliance. Frequently called upon by European regulators for counsel, she heads a working group of chief privacy officers and in-house lawyers at leading European multinationals who developed a new set of binding data protection rules in consultation with the Dutch data protection authority. These Binding Corporate Rules have since received EU-wide approval. Ms. Moerel’s clients include world-leading brands in technology, energy, banking and financial services, retail, consumer electronics, apparel, among other sectors around the world.
Ms. Moerel is a member of the Dutch Cyber Security Council, the advisory body of the Dutch cabinet on cybersecurity and is a professor of global ICT law at Tilburg University.
Ms. Moerel is a member of the OECD Volunteer Expert Group evaluating the OECD Privacy Principles and arbitrator and mediator with WIPO and the Dutch Institute for ICT Disputes. She authored the first Dutch textbooks on international outsourcing and online advertising and many international publications on data protection. In 2011, she obtained her Ph.D. in Binding Corporate Rules at Tilburg University, which was published by Oxford University Press in July 2012.
Ms. Moerel is a member of the international board of trustees of the World Wildlife Foundation International and chair of the supervisory board of the Dutch World Wild Life Foundation, a member of the supervisory board of the Dutch Royal Art Cabinet Mauritshuis, and a member of the board of the Dutch Rembrandt Association for the procurement of public arts.
