Maria Steeples has over 16 years’ experience, including more than 13 years in Singapore, in a wide range of corporate matters, including M&A, private equity, strategic alliances and joint ventures. She also leads the firm’s global warranty and indemnity insurance practice.
Maria is universally recognised in the market as the leading expert in Asia on W&I. Since 2008, she has advised leading insurers on the majority of all of the W&I policies issued in South and Southeast Asia. She has built the firm’s W&I insurance practice into a global business, expanding throughout Asia, Europe and the US. She has worked on high profile transactions for multi-national clients including AIG, Beazley, Liberty GTS, Berkshire Hathaway, Ironshore, Brockwell Capital Limited, Fusion and Allied World.
Maria has been integral to the development, industry understanding and use of the W&I Insurance in M&A deals in the region. She works closely with clients and prospective clients, helping them to navigate this complex product, educating them on its strategic benefits as a risk mitigation and deal facilitation tool. She has also presented alongside insurers and brokers at conferences around the world including in New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul and Malaysia.
Maria has extensive experience in both buy-side and sell-side M&A transactions across Southeast Asia. She has worked across multiple sectors with a particular focus on financial institutions, telecoms, energy and private equity. She has advised on a series of significant transactions for some of the world’s leading companies including AXA, Ace (now Chubb), HSBC, and Axiata. The transactions she has advised on cover a wide range of matters from complex cross border M&A to shareholder and investor arrangements across many jurisdictions in South East Asia.
