Mary Race is an associate in the firm’s Litigation Department, handling a range of privacy, data security, and employment matters. Her practice focuses on managing privacy and data security risks and helping clients develop comprehensive privacy programs that comply with U.S. and international laws. She counsels clients on developing privacy policies and notices for customers and employees, establishing contracts related to data transfer and protection obligations, and complying with breach notification laws.
Mary has assisted clients in responding to regulatory inquiries regarding their privacy and data security practices, including SEC investigations following high-profile data security incidents. She also advises multinational companies on the privacy and employment aspects of their M&A transactions. Mary is a regular contributor to the firm’s Employment Law Commentary and its Socially Aware blog, helping to keep clients informed on the latest developments in employment and social media.
Mary is also committed to pro bono service. While in law school, she volunteered for Pro Bono Students Canada, and she continues her pro bono work at MoFo, where she argued an appeal for a pro bono client before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Mary received her B.C.L./LL.B. from McGill University’s Faculty of Law and served as a law clerk to the Honourable Justice Louis LeBel of the Supreme Court of Canada. She holds an M.A. in English from the University of Southern California and a Masters in Music from Oxford University. Prior to joining the firm, Mary was a development consultant for Human Rights Watch and taught writing at the University of Southern California.
