Patrick Barrett is an associate at Morrison & Foerster’s German office in Berlin and member of the Corporate Department. His practice focuses on cross-border M&A, joint ventures, venture capital and private equity. Mr. Barrett’s experience includes representing clients in a wide-range of acquisitions, investments, and multi-jurisdictional transactions in North America, Asia and Europe.

Mr. Barrett was previously based in Morrison & Foerster’s Tokyo office.

Mr. Barrett earned his J.D. (magna cum laude) and M.B.A. in 2009 through a dual-degree program at the University of Minnesota Law School and University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. He received his B.A. in Political Science (magna cum laude) from Northeastern University in 2005. He also attended Stanford University’s Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies and is proficient in Japanese.

Representative Matters

  • TDK Corporation in the formation of its $3 billion joint venture with Qualcomm to provide industry leading radio frequency front-end (RFFE) modules and RF filters for mobile devices and for other fast-growing business segments, such as drones, robotics and automotive applications.

  • Hitachi and Hitachi Appliances in their formation of a global air conditioning joint venture with Johnson Controls, integrating the companies’ market leading HVAC businesses. Johnson Controls obtained a 60 percent ownership stake in Hitachi Appliances’ more than $2.6 billion global air conditioning business.

  • SoftBank and GungHo Online Entertainment in their joint purchase of a majority interest in Finnish mobile game company, Supercell, for $1.5 billion.

  • Represented SoftBank in its series of recent India internet investments, including in its SoftBank’s $627 million investment in Snapdeal, its $120 million Series C financing of Grofers International Pte. Ltd., an express delivery online marketplace application, its $100 million Series X financing of OYO Rooms, a budget hotel aggregator, and the $210 million Series E financing of Ola Cabs, the leading Indian taxi aggregator.

  • SEKI SUI HOUSE, LTD., Japan’s largest homebuilder, in its $468 million acquisition of U.S. homebuilder Woodside Homes Company, LLC.

  • Toshiba in its $2.3 billion acquisition of Landis+Gyr AG, a leading provider of advanced electricity and other utility meters and related solutions for the smart grid.

  • Terumo Corporation in its $2.6 billion acquisition of CaridianBCT, a leading provider of blood collection, treatment and related products.

  • ON Semiconductor in its $600 million acquisition of Sanyo Semiconductor, the first ever acquisition of a major Japanese semiconductor company by a US company (and one of the largest inbound investments into Japan to date). Recipient of “M&A Deal of the Year” by The M&A Advisor's International M&A Awards.

  • NTT DATA in its acquisition of Keane International, a global outsource provider of IT services relating to custom application development and management, enterprise application services, infrastructure solutions, and business processes.
