Randy Omid specializes in U.S. and foreign patent protection for large and startup companies. He advises clients on all aspects of intellectual property, including matters related to patent preparation and prosecution, reexamination, licensing, infringement, trade secrets, acquisitions, and competitive analysis.
Mr. Omid has extensive experience in the strategic planning, development, and management of global IP portfolios tailored to individual clients’ business needs. For startup clients, Mr. Omid builds patent portfolios that attract venture funding and deter competitors from asserting patent infringement. Mr. Omid frequently travels to U.S. and foreign patent offices on behalf of a Fortune 100 client to secure patents covering high-profile mobile devices.
Mr. Omid has expertise in a range of technologies, including software systems and processes, electronic circuits, mechanical devices, and medical devices. He represents a variety of companies in areas such as consumer electronics, display manufacturing, multimedia distribution systems, payment networks, Internet-based technologies, and network architecture.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Omid was a senior engineer at Qualcomm Inc., where he developed and commercialized cellular communication and multimedia encoder/decoder technologies.
Mr. Omid received his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he was a member of the Thurston Society and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Mr. Omid received his master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, focusing on image and signal processing, from the University of California, San Diego. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, San Diego. Mr. Omid is admitted to practice in California, Washington DC, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
