Sylvia Rivera’s practice encompasses a diverse range of complex business litigation, with an emphasis on class action defense and financial services litigation. She has defended numerous consumer class actions involving Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code 17200 and 17500, the Consumers Legal Remedies Act, and other states’ prohibitions from unfair business practices, for clients in the retail, manufacturing, and insurance industries. Ms. Rivera’s financial services litigation has included matters involving the Truth in Lending Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Rees-Levering Motor Vehicle Sales and Finance Act, and the Federal Arbitration Act.

Ms. Rivera also has significant experience representing businesses in commercial and employment disputes, including in breach-of-contract, trade secrets, and fraud claims. She has extensive experience in both the trial and appellate courts, and has argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the California Court of Appeal.

Ms. Rivera maintains an active pro bono practice. She successfully represented a pro bono client before the Ninth Circuit in an immigration matter, and has provided legal assistance to victims of domestic violence. She also has served on the firm’s Pro Bono Committee.

Ms. Rivera received her J.D. from the UCLA School of Law in 2002, where she was a member of the State Moot Court Team and editor-in-chief of the Chicano-Latino Law Review. She received her B.A. in political science and sociology in 1998 from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a Chancellor’s Scholar and elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Ms. Rivera is the former hiring partner for the firm’s Los Angeles office. She has been named a “Rising Star” in business litigation by Super Lawyers magazine. Ms. Rivera is a member of the board of directors for the Western Center on Law & Poverty, a member of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, and an alumnus of the Hastings Leadership Academy for Women.
