Dr. Zachary Kemmerer focuses on patent drafting and prosecution, as well as freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses, with an emphasis on life sciences and biotechnology. He has prior research experience in protein and lipid biochemistry, molecular biology, and small molecule psychedelic compounds.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Dr. Kemmerer completed his doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the Biochemistry Department where he published graduate research in Nature Communications, Molecular Cell, and Cell Chemical Biology. Dr. Kemmerer led work elucidating the function of multiple kinase-like proteins involved in mitochondrial respiration, cellular lipid homeostasis, and general metabolism, in an effort to address rare human disease states.

Dr. Kemmerer simultaneously was a consultant at the Usona Institute where he assisted in the design and implementation of Porta Sophia, a robust prior art repository for accelerating patent examination and vetting future commercial pursuits in the field of psychedelics. During this time, Dr. Kemmerer became intimately familiar with small molecule psychedelics, current commercial entities, and the rapidly expanding patent landscape.

Dr. Kemmerer received his M.S. in chemistry, with a focus in biochemistry, from Villanova University where he studied small molecule activation of Nrf2 transcription factor and its cytoprotective biproducts. He received his B.A. in chemistry and philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kemmerer also earned Division 1 All-American honors in collegiate wrestling while at the University of Pennsylvania, and has previously competed on NBC’s hit TV show American Ninja Warrior.
